RESP - Respiratory Therapy


RESP 2105. Medical Terminology (2-0-2) RESP 2105. Medical Terminology (2-0-2) Introduction to medical vocabulary, including root words, prefixes, suffixes, and combining forms.

RESP 2115. Cardiopulmonary Physiology (3-0-3) Prerequisite: BIOL 2222. A comprehensive study of the structure and function of the respiratory system.

RESP 2116. Cardiopulmonary Assessment (1-0-1) Prerequisite: BIOL 2222. A study of the techniques of cardiopulmonary assessment.

RESP 2117. Respiratory Pathophysiology (2-0-2) Prerequisite: BIOL 2222. A study of the disease process in obstructive, restrictive, and other lung diseases.

RESP 2118. Pharmacology for Respiratory Care (2-0-2) Prerequisite: RESP 2115. A study of the commonly used cardiopulmonary drugs.

RESP 2119. Neonatal Respiratory Care (3-0-3) Prerequisite: RESP 2118. Provides knowledge necessary for working in a neonatal respiratory intensive care unit. Students will be exposed to topics including fetal development, normal and abnormal deliveries, evaluation of newborn infants, acid-base and electrolyte disturbances, pulmonary disorders, and neonatal respiratory care equipment and supplies.

RESP 2215. Respiratory Care Procedures and Equipment (2-2-3) Prerequisites: CHEM 1152 and CHEM 1152L or CHEM 1212 and CHEM 1212L and RESP 2105. Basic therapeutics and equipment for gas, humidity, and aerosol administration, IPPB and incentive spirometry. Some basic pharmacology or aerosolized drugs are included.

RESP 2216. Blood Gases (2-2-3) Prerequisites: CHEM 1152 and CHEM 1152L or CHEM 1212 and CHEM 1212L. Study of blood gas analysis and its clinical application. These major topics are included: oxygen and carbon dioxide transport, acid-base balance, blood gas interpretation, dead space, shunt, cardiac output, oxygen consumption. Laboratory sessions provide experience in blood gas sampling and analysis.

RESP 2217. Mechanical Ventilation (2-2-3) Prerequisite: RESP 2215. Techniques of mechanical ventilation (e.g., SIMV, PEEP, CPAP, PS) and airway management (e.g., intubation, suctioning).

RESP 2225. Intensive Respiratory Care (2-2-3) Prerequisite: RESP 2301. A study of the advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) protocols and intensive respiratory care procedures.

RESP 2226. Clinical Simulation and Application (2-2-3) Prerequisites: RESP 2225 and RESP 2303.

RESP 2301. Clinical Practicum 1: Fundamentals of Respiratory Care (0-18-3) Prerequisites: RESP 2115, RESP 2216, and RESP 2215. Clinical application of didactic knowledge and laboratory skills.

RESP 2302. Clinical Practicum 2: Clinical Application of Respiratory Therapy Procedures (0-18-3) Prerequisite: RESP 2301. Clinical application of didactic knowledge and laboratory skills.

RESP 2303. Clinical Practicum 3: Clinical Application of Advanced Respiratory Therapy Procedures (0-18-3) Prerequisite: RESP 2302. Clinical application of didactic knowledge and laboratory skills.
