ARTH - Art History

 
ARTH 1100. Art Appreciation (3-0-3) A survey of art throughout the ages. Course objectives are to develop abilities for comprehending and evaluating concepts and issues pertaining to cultural heritage as embodied in the visual arts. Restricted to non-art majors.

ARTH 1126. Art and Artists (2-0-2) An examination of a selected group of modern and contemporary movements within the contexts of their time which are so often overlooked. This class will direct the students' attention to the influence of sociological and cultural events that often directly influence art and artists.

ARTH 1127. Art Resources (1-0-1) An introduction to resources available in the Department of Art. This includes a visiting artists series, faculty and student presentation, art resources available in the library, new technologies and art in the region.

ARTH 2125. History of Ancient and Medieval Art (3-0-3) The study of painting, sculpture, and architecture from prehistory to the Renaissance. Consideration will be given to major institutions, roles, and influences.

ARTH 2126. Renaissance Art to 1800 (3-0-3) The study of painting, sculpture, and architecture from the Renaissance period to 1800. Consideration will be given to major institutions, roles, and influences.

ARTH 3127. Early Modern Art 1800-1945 (3-0-3) This course is a general survey of the art historical movements that introduced and established Modernism as the dominating spirit of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Consideration will be given within the context of the political and social events of the time, but it will also take into consideration the literature, music, theater and popular arts of the period.

ARTH 3128. Contemporary Art 1945 to the Present (3-0-3) This course is a survey of art historical movements evolved since WWII. Consideration will be given to the art of the last fifty years, within the context of the political and social events of the time, but it will also take into consideration the literature, music, theater, and popular arts. The rise of new media and techniques will be considered as part of an ever expanding definition of the visual arts.

ARTH 3555. Selected Topics in Art History (3-0-3) A study of various art history topics including a range of cultures and continents. This course may be taken twice for credit if the topic is different.

ARTH 5125. Research and Seminar in Art History (3-0-3) Emphasis is given to defining problems for research and study and the acquisition and presentation of written evidence. Oral, written and visual presentation required.

ARTH 6185. Graduate Problem: Art History (3-0-3) Research problem based on student's background and performance in other advanced courses. May be taken twice for credit.
