SPAN - Spanish

SPAN 1001. Elementary Spanish 1 (3-0-3)
Introduction to listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish and to the culture of Spanish-speaking regions.

SPAN 1002. Elementary Spanish 2 (3-0-3) Prerequisite: SPAN 1001. Continued listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish with further study of the culture of Spanish-speaking regions.

SPAN 2001. Intermediate Spanish 1 (3-0-3) Prerequisite: SPAN 1002. A more advanced course in composition, conversation, grammar, and reading. This course aims at a thorough study of the Spanish idiom, pronunciation, verb study, oral expression, and functional grammar. Cultural study focuses on Spanish-speaking America.

SPAN 2002. Intermediate Spanish 2 (3-0-3) Prerequisite: SPAN 2001. An intermediate course in composition, conversation, grammar, and reading. Aimed at an intermediate knowledge of the Spanish idiom, pronunciation, verb study, oral expression, and functional grammar.

SPAN 3150. Spanish Conversation (3-0-3) Prerequisite: SPAN 2002 or equivalent. Conducted in Spanish, this course offers students a series of progressive activities to raise the level of proficiency within the context of daily Hispanic culture. Supportive activities include grammar review and readings closely related to oral activities.

SPAN 3160. Grammar and Composition (3-0-3) Prerequisite: SPAN 2002 or equivalent. Practice in writing letters, brief articles, themes, and reports. Review of selected segments of grammar.

SPAN 3165. Phonetics (3-0-3) Prerequisite: SPAN 3150 or SPAN 3160. Written exercises and phonetic transcription reinforce theoretical points as students improve their pronunciation through the study of the distribution and articulation of Span sounds. Regular pronunciation exercises are accomplished through the use of short dialogues and poetry readings.

SPAN 3166. Advanced Spanish Grammar (3-0-3) Prerequisite: SPAN 3160 and 3165 with a grade of C or better. This is an advanced course in Spanish grammar. It will prepare students for further work in Spanish, and it will provide them the background necessary for more advanced courses in Spanish. While much of the focus will be on continued mastery of the most difficult points of Spanish grammar, the course will also strive to present a perspective on grammar as a communicative tool, not as a set of rules to be memorized.

SPAN 3170. Studies in Civilization: Spain (3-0-3) Prerequisites: SPAN 3150 and SPAN 3160. An overview of the cultural history of Spain and history of the Spanish language from the formation of the nation to contemporary Spain. The course is taught in Spanish.

SPAN 3175. Studies in Civilization: Latin America (3-0-3) Prerequisites: SPAN 3150 and 3160. An overview of the cultural history of Spanish America from the pre-Columbian period to contemporary Spanish America, as reflected in the arts and literature. The course is taught in Spanish.

SPAN 3177. Myth-Making in Latin America (3-0-3) Prerequisites: SPAN 3175   with a grade of C or better. How have historical figures Eva Per�n, Che Guevara, Sim�n Bol�var, and La Malinche been transformed into mythical forces? How have they been used to articulate culture and politics? This course studies the ways these famous characters from history have been converted into actual systems of communication within various historical contexts, and under different ideological and political conditions. Work via an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating materials from literature, history, politics, film, and photography.

SPAN 4115. Survey of Spanish Literature. (3-0-3) Prerequisite: SPAN 3170. Spanish literature of Spain from the Middle Ages to the present.

SPAN 4116. Survey of Latin American Literature. (3-0-3) Prerequisite: SPAN 3175. Literature of Latin America from the Colonial period to the present.

SPAN 4117. Spanish Golden Age Theater. (3-0-3) Prerequisite: SPAN 3170 and 4115 with a grade of C or better. This course provides students a general panorama of Golden Age Theater, including the reading and analysis of some of the canonical works. The selection of works affords students experience with a variety of subgenres such as epic, tragedy, comedy, and the entrem�s. The study of each work will center upon the sociopolitical message of the text.

SPAN 4118. Contemporary Film: Spain (3-0-3) Prerequisite: SPAN 3170 and 4115 with a grade of C or better. The main objective of this advanced language course is at the same time to develop proficiency in all four language skills and to provide an introduction to contemporary Spanish culture, through the study of film.

SPAN 4119. Literature of Spanish Speaking Communitites in the United States (3-0-3) Prerequisite: SPAN 3175 and SPAN 4116 with a grade of C or better. An advanced language course, which examines the Latin American and Latino experience in the United States. Classwork focuses on readings and films by and about Latin Americans in the United States and specific uses of Spanish language from these communities. Course includes occasional visits from members of the Latino community. Course will be conducted entirely in Spanish.

SPAN 4120. Perspectives on Mexico: Works and Experiences of Selected Mexican Women (3-0-3) Prerequisite: SPAN 3175 and 4116 with a grade of C or better. The instent of this advanced language/culture class is to develop proficiency in all the basic language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) while providing an alternate introduction to modern Mexican culture by focusing on the works and experiences of selected Mexican women. After a brief consideration of several key women of the 19th century and earlier, study some major figures of the 20th century, and the cultural and political background of their lives and works. Texts to be studied include films, short stories, plays, chronicles, interviews and other selections from the press.

SPAN 4899. Independent Study (2-6 hours) Prerequisite: Consent of department chair. Independent study of topics of material approved in advance by the instructor. May be repeated for credit with consent of the Department chair.

SPAN 5101. Problems of Spanish Grammar (3-0-3) A concentrated treatment of recurring difficulties in spoken and written Spanish. Particular focus is on the subjunctive mood, the true imperative command forms, and the sequence of tenses.

SPAN 5102. Advanced Problems of Spanish Grammar (3-0-3) Prerequisite: SPAN 5101. A study of persistent problems of Spanish, especially as related to translation. Included are the passive voice, resultant state, par vs. para, ser and estar, and the preterite vs. Imperfect.

SPAN 5555. Selected Topics in Spanish (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Spanish 3170 or SPAN 3175. A study of various aspects of the Spanish-speaking world such as literary movements, specific writers, film, and the press. Topics will vary each semester; the course is designed to enhance the students' written and spoken expression in Spanish. May be taken twice for credit with change of topic.
