CHEM 1211. Principles of Chemistry 1 (3-0-3) Prerequisite: Completion of MATH 0195 or placement in MATH 1111 or higher. Corequisite: CHEM 1211L. First course in a two-semester sequence covering the fundamental principles and applications of chemistry. Designed for science majors. Topics to be covered include composition of matter, nomenclature, stoichiometry, periodic relations, chemical reactions and equations, thermochemistry, atomic structure and chemical bonding.
CHEM 1211L. Principles of Chemistry 1 Lab (0-3-1) Prerequisite: MATH 0195 with a minimum grade of C. Co-requisite: CHEM 1211. Laboratory exercises supplement the lecture materials and develop knowledge of chemical concepts. It includes experiments on separation of mixtures, determination of molar mass, volumetric analysis and colorimetric methods. (Course fee required.)
CHEM 1151. Survey of Chemistry 1 (3-0-3) Corequisite: CHEM 1151L. First course in a two-semester sequence covering elementary principles of general, organic and biochemistry designed for allied health profession majors. Topics to be covered include elements and compounds, chemical equations, nomenclature, and molecular geometry. (Course fee required.)
CHEM 1151L. Survey of Chemistry 1 Lab (0-2-1) Corequisite: CHEM 1151. Lab experiments include laboratory measurements, density determination, separation of mixture, empirical formula, types of chemical reactions, consumer products, specific heat, rates of reactions, pH and buffers, and acid-base titration.
