ENGL 3108. Introduction to Playwriting (3-0-3) Prerequisite: ENGL 1102. A playwriting workshop focusing on the production and in-class critique of students' creative work and including study of dramatic forms, modes, schools, and individual playwrights. The course involves some written analysis of the work of published/produced playwrights and, especially, of fellow students' manuscripts. Students' creative work will build the required portfolio.


ENGL 3109. Introduction to Screenwriting (3-0-3) Prerequisite: ENGL 1102. A screenwriting workshop focusing on the production and in-class critique of students' creative work and including study of produced films and screenplays. The course involves some written analysis of the professional works studied and, especially, of fellow students' manuscripts. Students' creative work will build the required portfolio.


ARTS 4237. Narrative Illustration (0-6-3) Prerequisite: ARTS 1011. In this course students use drawing and writing together to tell stories. The development of a short graphic novel is the goal of this course. (Maybe taken up to 3 times for credit)(Course Fee Required.)


ENGL 5157. Advanced Poetry Writing (3-0-3) Prerequisite: ENGL 3106, Introduction to Poetry Writing. A poetry workshop focusing on the production and in-class critique of students' creative work and including advanced study of poetic forms, modes, schools, and individual poets. The course involves some written analysis of the work of published poets and, especially, of fellow students' poems. Students' creative work will build the required portfolio. Majors in the Creative Writing Track intending to submit a literary nonfiction manuscript for the senior thesis will begin work on that project. 5157G students will build a professional portfolio.


ENGL 5158. Advanced Fiction Writing (3-0-3) Prerequisite: ENGL 3105, Introduction to Fiction Writing. A fiction workshop focusing on the production and in-class critique of students' creative work and including advanced study of the short story, the elements of fiction, and individual writers. The course involves some written analysis of the work of published fiction writers and, especially, of fellow students' stories. Students' creative work will build the required portfolio. For majors in the Creative Writing Track intending to submit a fiction manuscript for the senior thesis, the portfolio will constitute the beginning of that project. 5158G students will build a professional portfolio.


ENGL 5159. Advanced Creative Nonfiction Writing (3-0-3) Prerequisite: ENGL 3107, Introduction to Creative Nonfiction Writing. A literary nonfiction workshop focusing on the production and in-class critique of students' creative work and including advanced study of memoir, literary journalism, personal essay, and individual writers. The course involves some written analysis of the work of published poets and, especially, of fellow students' nonfiction prose. Students' creative work will build the required portfolio. For majors in the Creative Writing Track intending to submit a creative nonfiction manuscript for the senior thesis, the portfolio will constitute the beginning of that project. 5159G students will build a professional portfolio.
