ENGL 3105. Introduction to Fiction Writing (3-0-3) Prerequisite: ENGL 1102. A fiction workshop focusing on the production and in-class critique of students' creative work and including study of the short story, the elements of fiction, and individual writers. The course involves some written analysis of the work of published fiction writers and, especially, of fellow students' stories. Students' creative work will build the required portfolio.

ENGL 3106. Introduction to Poetry Writing (3-0-3) Prerequisite: ENGL 1102. A poetry workshop focusing on the production and in-class critique of students' creative work and including study of poetic forms, modes, schools, and individual poets. The course involves some written analysis of the work of published poets and, especially, of fellow students' poems. Students' creative work will build the required portfolio.

ENGL 3107. Introduction to Creative Nonfiction Writing (3-0-3) Prerequisite: ENGL 1102. A literary nonfiction workshop focusing on the production and in-class critique of students' creative work and including study of memoir, literary journalism, personal essay, and individual writers. The course involves some written analysis of the work of published writers and, especially, of fellow students' nonfiction prose. Students' creative work will build the required portfolio.

ENGL 3126. Feature Writing (3-0-3) Prerequisites: ENGL 1102 and ENGL 3155. This course instructs students to write effective non-fiction stories that would appear in newspapers, magazines, or online. The emphasis here will be on fact-based stories about people, places, and issues. To accomplish this, the course will develop skills in narration, characterization, and sensory details. All stories will be written for the purpose of being published in a campus or local publication. The craft of freelance writing will be explored.

ENGL 3128. Editorial and Opinion Writing (3-0-3) Prerequisites: ENGL 1102. The purpose of this course is to give students experience in writing editorials (newspaper, magazine, online) and columns (political, humor, sports, lifestyle, arts, and business) for both print and online media. Discussion will also cover legal traps, campus newspaper columns, plagiarism, and research.

ENGL 3155. News Writing (3-0-3) Prerequisite: ENGL 1102 This course provides a study of and practice in reporting and news writing. Students will study reporting techniques, interviewing techniques, story organizations, different types of leads, copy editing, and legal aspects of journalism, among other topics. Publication in the Saber and The Ledger-Enquirer will be encouraged.

ENGL 3156. Advertising Writing (3-0-3) Prerequisite: ENGL 1102. Study of and practice in advertising writing for a variety of media, including television, radio, magazines, and newspapers.

ENGL 3158. Writing in the Workplace (3-0-3) Prerequisite: ENGL 1102. Study and practice of the principles of written communications in business: letter writing, report writing, planning, organizing writing, and rewriting from research to final manuscript. Some emphasis on word processing and telecommunications skills. (Course fee required.)
